33. The Best Gift is a Good Story

The villagers told us that they treasure hearing stories from other parts of the world, because that makes them feel rich. For example, some of the boys had not heard of Sweden and wanted us to give an example of an export. Vedran mentioned Volvo cars, which they had actually heard of, and their response to that was: “Thank you for the story, now we feel like we own a Volvo”.

Trekking + Lovo Party

Today, one of the locals took us on a trekking tour of the island. We got to hike through the beautiful tropical forest and cut our way through the density. We got to see the gorgeous white beach on the other side of the island, and at the end of the day, we climbed up to the highest peak for a spectacular panorama of the surrounding islands.

Although Dilek & Vedran were in their early 20s, and in relatively good shape, it was impossible to keep up with our local guide. He had a seemingly effortless technique for covering vast distances across the islands unique vegetation, which we were not quite able to simulate. He even “skipped” up one of the tallest palm trees in a matter of seconds, to retrieve coconuts for us. He then cut them open with a machete and we had a lovely break in front of an indescribable view.
That night, we had dinner on the beach. Like most of our meals, we were served the catch of the day, which the young boys had caught with their hands or home made spears. After dinner, the locals wanted to share some of their songs with us, and put on a dance show. Eventually, we all ended up dancing on the beach. One of the local girls were very happy that Vedran accepted her invitation to dance.

Thank you and farewell song from the villagers

The evening ended with a Kava ceremony and pleasant conversation with the villagers. They told us about their world view, that they do not believe in material possessions, and if you keep a cheerful mood things have a way of working out. On a side note, they seemed more eager to talk to male tourists, as women are expected to be demure and quiet.

It truly is a nice outlook on life, and kind of the same reason we are sharing our stories in these texts. Vedran also told our hosts about former Yugoslavia and some of the things that he had experienced. It made a very interesting evening conversation, parts of which the locals had difficulty grasping. Perhaps you can guess, dear friend, which those parts were?
